BRITISH forces have reclaimed the Falkland Islands after 74 days of occupation. The announcement came late last night from 10 Downing Street, confirming that Major General Jeremy Moore has accepted the surrender of all Argentine forces in East and West Falkland.

The final push began under the cover of darkness as paratroopers and Royal Marines yomped across the rugged terrain to reach the outskirts of the capital. Residents reported seeing white flags fluttering from buildings as the invaders laid down their arms. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher told a cheering House of Commons: "The Falkland Islands are once again under the government of their choice."

The cost of victory has been high, with 255 British servicemen losing their lives. However, the mood across the nation today is one of immense pride and relief as the Task Force prepares to head home. "We knew we could do it," said one soldier's wife in Portsmouth. "The boys have done us proud."
