THATCHER ESCAPES DEATH

IRA BOMB BLAST RIPS THROUGH BRIGHTON GRAND HOTEL

PRIME MINISTER Margaret Thatcher has narrowly survived an assassination attempt after a massive IRA bomb exploded at the Grand Hotel in Brighton early yesterday morning. The blast, which occurred at 2:54 am, tore through the hotel where senior members of the Conservative Party were staying for their annual conference. The five-pound gelignite bomb, hidden behind a bathtub in room 629, caused a massive chimney stack to collapse through the center of the building. Five people have been confirmed dead, including Sir Anthony Berry MP. Despite the devastation, a defiant Mrs. Thatcher insisted the conference would continue as planned. "The fact that we are gathered here now—shocked, but composed and determined—is a sign not only that this attack has failed, but that all attempts to destroy democracy by terrorism will fail," she told the conference just hours after the blast. Emergency services worked throughout the night to rescue those trapped in the rubble. Lord Tebbit, the Trade and Industry Secretary, was pulled from the debris after several hours, though his wife Margaret remains seriously injured. The IRA has claimed responsibility, warning: "Today we were unlucky, but remember we only have to be lucky once. You will have to be lucky always."
